Poisoning can occur through the exposure of chemicals that are often found in the house. Cleaning products, some plants, medicines and makeup account for most poisonings. Preparation is the first step in prevention of poisoning by securing cupboards and storage areas with child proof locks. Keep a poison control center near your phone with emergency phone numbers. If you suspect poisoning, look inside the child’s mouth to remove items present and to help identify what was ingested. When notifying the poison center take the child and the poison if known with you to the phone. The center will ask for critical information such as age, weight, the product name, and the amount swallowed. Providing the childs information to care sitters will allow them to give this information if needed in an emergency situation. Follow the poison centers direction as a first step before beginning any treatment such as syrup of Ipecac.
