Home safety addresses those areas around the home such as fire, falls, cooking, water safety and choking hazards. Identification of hazards in the home is a primary step in reducing risk and increasing safety in the household.

Establishment of outside lines of communication with relatives or friends in a non centralized location allows information of family members whereabouts and status be known. Immediate availability of important documents such as passports, titles, legal papers and medical records inside a fire resistant container will save time when it is critical.

Clean water may be one of the hardest items to get during an emergency. A container that can be transported has additional value. Preparation should include an inventory of needed items such as food, flashlights with extra batteries, dust masks, fire extinguisher, hand sanitizer and toilet paper. During an emergency infrastructure such as electrical power, indoor plumbing, and telephone service is likely to be interrupted for indetermined amounts of time. The family car can serve as a temporary charging station for cell phones and a box of supplies should be readily available to transport to the car in the event of an evacuation. Preparation of the home should include barriers for the window such as plastic sheeting and tape for sealing and tools to include hammer, shovel and hardware to fasten boards or other material.

Flashlights, medications, and self generator radios pay long term benefits during an emergency and should be incorporated into an emergency kit. Communication devices like whistles and signal mirrors allow for long distance notification for emergencies. Prepaid phone cards and cash in small denominations should be included in an evacuation kit. Dry food like granola bars or jerky allow for quick energy source when on the move.

Kits prepared in advance when the home must be evacuated should include a first aid kit.

Hazards to the respiratory includes particles which may be seen with the eye and vapors which are invisible to the naked eye.

Hearing loss is generally gradual and is rarely recovered once it is gone.
