Falls occur in the home as they do in the work place occuring on steps, while riding a bicycle or out of a window. The impact at the home can be greater because falls often involve children who can be injured from a small distance fall from furniture such as beds or chairs. Young children should be protected through the use of approved physical barriers such as safety gates at the top and the bottom of staircases. Check that railings along stairs are secure since these are relied and use by children beginning to walk. Window guards are readily available at retail stores and young childrens ingenuity to access windows should not be underestimated. Small children under the age of ten can fall through a window opening as small as five inches.
